Link & Sadie

“A Fetching Couple”

Link is a three-year-old, black, 11.5-pound male and Sadie is a three-year-old, black and tan, and 10.5-pound female. These shorthaired mini-dachshunds were littermates. Link is neutered and Sadie is spayed.  Link and Sadie were relinquished by their owners who had twin babies and could not give the dogs enough attention. They were raised from puppies with cats, so it assumed they would get along with cats in a new home. They are crate trained and get along well with the three doxies in the foster home.   Friends came over recently for the evening, and Link and Sadie were on their laps in no time.  After a day with us, both Link and Sadie have quickly bonded with our family, and show us a lot of attention and affection.   Link and Sadie love to play with our 11-year-old grandson and do not appear to be hesitant or apprehensive around kids. They are a "fetching couple”. They will play fetch with you for hours and hours.  We had to hide the toy to get them to stop fetching.   Link and Sadie run out together to get the toy. Link gets it and brings it back and drops it about a foot away.  Sadie picks it up and puts it in your hand. We would prefer to place the dogs together in a new home but each one would make a good companion for another dog.  This happy, affectionate and playful pair will bring a lot of joy and fun into their forever home. If you are interested in Link & Sadie please fill out an application and email Sue at msflowers96@sbcglobal.net.

Name: Hailey
Age: 8 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 11 lbs.

Name: Raven
Age: 5 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Micro-Mini – 7 lbs.

These doxies are being fostered in the S.F. Bay Area.

Hailey and Raven were surrendered to rescue because their previous owner is in the final stage of her battle with cancer.  She needed to be sure her beloved girls were safe and going to a wonderful new home.

Hailey and Raven are a mother/daughter combo and at only 8 and 5 yrs old, they have prematurely white faces.  Hailey has unusual eyes which are brown but rimmed with blue.  This is most noticeable on her right eye - it's quite very striking.

Whenever their previous owner was hospitalized, the girls were left on their own with only a daily food visit by a family member.  Before arriving in rescue, they spent more than a month on their own.   This lack of attention over the last year or so left them in a bad state, medically, emotionally and mentally.

They were so clingy their first day in rescue their foster mom got very little done as she spent the day just holding these two.   A consistent routine and sleeping in the bedroom has helped these two relax and they are no longer so needy.

We next tackled their medical needs.  We updated their vaccinations and Raven was spayed, had a hernia repaired and was treated for an infected eye.  (You can see this eye issue in the photo - it should be all cleared up soon).

Now we are focusing on their mental state.  Other than cuddling with a human, all they used to do is cuddle with each other.  They had no interest in exploring the yard, playing with toys etc. We started taking them on walks and from the way they behaved, we don't believe they had ever been on leashes before.  Hailey is the brave one and adapted quickly.  At first, Raven did the walks with her tail tucked tightly under her.  Now Raven's tail is up and wagging.

The real progress with these two happened when Stephanie of Doggie Adventures in Los Altos, added them to her pro-bono dog list.  She has just begun taking them and so far they have been to the beach (which they liked) and the hills (which they loved! No doubt due to the presence of a wonderfully smelly horse stable and a landowner's lap to rest in).   They are much more outgoing now - in the hopes that they will get to go out!

They would like their new home to continue with walks and/or outings.  While they love to cuddle, now that they know there is so many interesting things to see and do, they want to get out and explore their world daily.

Being left alone, inside for days on end, wreaked havoc on their house training.  Their foster home has been working hard to get them back to being trained.  They have made significant progress and are almost 100%. They will need to be monitored for the first few weeks in a new home to make sure they don't regress.

If you are interested in Haily and Raven, please fill out an application and email Sue at msflowers96@sbcglobal.net.

The adoption fee is $400.00 for the pair.

Name: Helen
Age: 12 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 9.4 lbs.

We received a call from a shelter about three stray dachshunds that had come in together.  They all had medical issues that would take time to resolve, so the shelter was looking for a rescue to take them.  Two of the doxies were younger females that had hair loss and needed dental work.  The third was Helen.  She was not the age of dog that folks are lining up to adopt.  It didn’t matter.  We wanted her anyway.

Rescuing Helen turns out to be one of the best decisions we have made.  She is a delightful dog.   She is a tiny little thing with a very sweet, very gentle personality.  From the moment she arrived in foster care as a “stinker”, she has been a pleasure to have around.  (An immediate bath fixed her smell.  Helen who had known her foster mom for only five minutes before the scrubbing, wagged her tail the whole time).

Helen has cataracts (especially in her right eye) but they don’t seem to slow her down any.  She managed to convince the dog walker that she needed to go on the dog adventure hikes despite her age and vision problems.  She keeps up with the big dogs like a trooper.  And if a squirrel crosses her path – he’d better watch out!

If there are people at home, Helen wants to be with them.  She loves to cuddle.  She is so gentle, she could go to a home with young children as long as they were equally gentle with her. (No babies or toddlers.)

Helen gets along great with the other dogs.  A young female dog in her foster home is madly in love with Helen; and the cranky older female foster dog, who usually doesn’t like other dogs, has no issues with Helen either.

Helen is smaller than most cats and we believe she would do fine living with them.  She has been debarked which we learned during her first day in foster care.  She was scared to go down the hallway and wanted someone to come get her so she could join everyone.  Since then, she hasn’t made a peep.

Helen is a really easy, extremely loving little girl.  She is very quiet and would be happy to sit by your side all day long.  Helen is scheduled to be spayed and to get a complete dental.  She wants a home that will spoil her in her senior years the way she should have been spoiled all along.

If you would like to meet Helen, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Helen is $125.00.

Name: Maple
Age: 10 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 9 lbs.

Maple first came into our program three years ago.  She had been a spoiled, adored and well taken care of princess.  Unfortunately, the addition of babies and toddlers to the household made Maple absolutely miserable, so she made her way into rescue.

Now she is back again as her former adopter has a new job which requires her to travel frequently, and Maple does not like being kenneled.  The good news is that Maple was one of her foster mom’s all time favorite dogs, so she was welcomed back into rescue with open arms.

Maple is gorgeous.  She is also a diva with an extra helping of dachshund attitude.  She does not greet new dogs well at all (she does a great Cujo imitation), but with the proper handling, she gets past this quickly.  As proof, not only is she living with a group of dogs (with new ones arriving all the time), she is also going on off-leash beach trips with big dogs!  Her attitude also shows up when there is excitement at the door (such as a visitor who just rang the bell). You must also never try to move Maple away from a door with your leg/foot as she may bite.  In her foster home, this problem is easily solved by picking up Maple and either holding her or putting in her crate before opening the door.

Maple is an extremely loving dog that really bonds with her people.  She is more than willing to help you with your heating bills this winter.  She loves to sleep under the covers with her person and it’s like having a nice hot water bottle in bed.  She is also perfectly willing to let you dress her up in silly outfits.  On cold days, Maple actually enjoys wearing sweaters or coats.

Sadly, Maple is not good with cats.  She likes calm and consistency and this means no kids either.  Respectful visiting grandchildren are ok, but the hustle and bustle of kids and their friends running in and out on a regular basis is too much for her.  Maple should be crated around toddlers as they make her so nervous she may bite.  Maple would do fine with another dachshund or two (at times she even plays with the other dachshunds and she shares her dog bed with an assortment of companions, including an annoying puppy).

Maple would love to have someone around most of the time but she is also ok with her people going to work. She would be happy to be an RV dog riding shotgun on the passenger’s lap.  However, what Maple wants most is a forever home.  Maple is perfectly housebroken and crate trained.

If you would like to meet Maple, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Maple is $150.00.

This dog is being fostered in the San Francisco area.
Name: Lazyboy (Zee)
Ages: 4 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Zee came to rescue with his AKC papers and the most expensive dog food we have ever found!  He had been a daddy's boy and was very well loved.  He was surrendered to rescue when his family go no longer keep him.

Zee had previously lived in an apartment, and at his foster home, was thrilled to discover the joy of having a backyard.  He quickly learned the doggie door and loves being able to go out and investigate.

We don’t know why the breeder named this sweet dog Lazyboy, because he is not lazy!  Zee loves to go for walks!  At first, he was a terrible puller on the leash because he was so excited.  He has gotten better as the walks have become a consistent part of his routine.  He enjoys all toys including a dachshund favorite – a rubbery squeaky.  He follows his foster family from room to room and always wants to be near them.

Zee lived with children in his former home and we think he would be fine in a new home with children 8 and up.  Zee likes other dogs and as he is young and playful, he would enjoy having a frisky doggie sibling.  We don’t know how Zee feels about cats.

Zee is housebroken and crate trained.  He needs a home that continues to get him out and about in the world and expose him to new things.

If you are interested in Zee, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Zee is $200.00.

Name: Pepper
Age: 2 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Standard – 18 lbs.

Circumstances changed for Pepper’s previous owner, and she was surrendered to rescue to find a good home.  Pepper was very well cared for and arrived in foster care with a trunk full of doggie clothes.  Pepper even ran in a dachshund race in her puppyhood! (Alas, she did not win).

We immediately set about getting Pepper spayed and providing her more socialization opportunities.  At first, Pepper was a little barky in strange new situations, but she is much better now.  She loves her daily walks, although she does pull on the leash.  She goes off-leash on doggie adventures to the hills and the beach, and she is extremely well-behaved on these outings (these outings include almost 20 dogs of all sizes).

Pepper may be two years old, but we have to confess – she is a big baby.  If she gets a correction from another dog, she cries and carries on like a very young puppy.  She also does not like being scolded for anything.  If you “baby talk” to her, she will start to cry and tell you how much she needs love.

Pepper is great with all people and has been fine with kids.  She has been having lots of fun playing with the other dogs in her foster home.

Pepper was piddle-pad trained in her former home.  We are working on transitioning her to the outside; and while we have made progress, she still uses her piddle pad at times.

Pepper is a beautiful dog.  People are always commenting on her gorgeous appearance.  She would love a home with a canine buddy.  She would also love a home that continues to give her daily exercise and takes her off on adventures.

If you would like to meet Pepper, please e-mail Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and an adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Pepper is $250.00.

Name: Bart
Ages: 6 years
Color: Black & Tan Dapple
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Male/Neutered
Size: Tweenie – 14 lbs.

Bart was found walking down a road in Central California . No owner was ever found and he ended up at the shelter. We, in rescue, lost a lot of sleep worrying about him, because our foster homes were full. Fortunately, the shelter personnel liked him a lot too and kept him for two months until we finally had foster space available for him.  Despite the extended time in the shelter, no one ever showed up to claim him.

Bart turned out to be worth the worry and the wait.  He is a delightful dog!  He greets everyone with a wagging tail and a smiling face. He really knows how to work his big brown eyes to get you to do whatever he wants.

Bart’s foster mom calls him her “S” dog because of the many S adjectives that describe him.  First of all he is Stout.  It’s not that he is really overweight; he’s just a sturdily built dog. (At least that’s what Bart tells us).  Next he is Silly.   He always has a goofy grin and he is up for any kind of play or adventure.  Bart is also very Social.   At Halloween, he was the only dog in the house that was well behaved enough to be allowed to greet the trick-or-treaters.  Bart wagged his tail for all, no matter how strange the costumes.  He thought that the throng of little people at the door was the greatest thing ever. Bart is extremely Sweet. He follows his foster mom from room to room and he loves to cuddle on the big bed.  Bart is now also Silent.  He was barky when he first came into foster care, but a consistent routine, daily exercise and the occasional wearing of a citronella collar worked wonders on him.  He now barks only when someone first comes to the door.

Because Bart is so sweet and social we believe he would do fine in a house with young children. Bart gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home including a very large dog.  Cats are his nemesis, so no cats for Bart.

Bart loves going for walks.  Bart has also begun going on group off-leash dog outings to the beach and he adores these trips!  So much so that he now sits at the passenger side of every SUV he sees, hoping that it will let him in and take him to the beach. Bart would be a great RV dog especially if he can ride shotgun.

Bart is in good health.  His vaccinations are all up-to-date. You cannot imagine the level of love and devotion Bart will give you.  He is so grateful for every kindness, and he is very little trouble.  Do you have room in your heart and home for Bart?

If you are interested in Bart, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Bart is $175.00.

Name: Bella
Age:
 5 years
Color: Red
Coat: Smooth
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size:
Mini – 9 lbs.

Bella was relinquished by a family with a 4-year old child after she had lived with them for two years. Her previous family had to move to an apartment where pets are not allowed.

In Italian, Bella means beautiful, and this little girl is certainly 'bella'!  Bella is a happy, attentive responsive, curious dog with an expressive, wagging tail and a cute, perky walk. Bella is a fast learner and wants to please her people. She has a velvety red coat and is very petite. She gets along very well with the other three dachshunds in her foster home and is now just one of the pack.  She does very well on the leash and is used to taking walks.  Bella is not a picky eater and loves to get doggie treats.  She is great with kids.  When we rescued her, she went right to our 11-year old grandson and hopped onto his lap, and she's happy on anyone's lap.

Bella is definitely house-trained, and it seems as if she's been trained to potty for treats.  Every time she is let outside, she'll pee in the same spot, even if she's just been out minutes before, and then comes back to her person looking for praise and a reward.

Bella will make a great family dog.  She'll do well in a one-dog family, or with other dogs.  Bella would love to come and be Princess Bella in her forever home.  If you are interested in Bella, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Bella is $200.00.

Name: Zelda
Age: 5 years
Color: Black/Tan Dapple
Coat: Longhair
Sex: Female/Spayed
Size: Mini – 9.5 lbs.

Zelda was turned into the shelter as a stray along with two other dachshunds.  Rescue was asked to take the dogs because two of them had hair loss and one was a senior.

We happily scooped up Zelda and the others and were pleased to note that Zelda’s hair loss was minor.  The picture of her was within a few days of arriving in rescue, and you can see the dermatitis is not very noticeable.   Zelda’s fleas have all been killed and with a good diet and a warm bed, her minor hair loss should be a thing of the past in no time.

Zelda has turned out to be a little gem.  She is great with the other doxies in her foster home, likes all people living there, and immediately gravitated to the 11 year-old boy.  He provides Zelda with her favorite lap and snuggle spot while watching TV.  She is very calm and quiet and does not seem to bark.  She will be a great companion dog because she loves to snuggle right next to her people.  She does not jump.  She sits looking at you until you pick her up.

We think Zelda could live with cats as so far she has ignored them on her walks.  She also walks nicely past other dogs, including big ones.  No Napoleon complex for her!

Zelda is housebroken and has a sweet personality.  She is in a first time foster home and they give her an A++ rating.  If you are interested in Zelda, please contact Lindy at linla@comcast.net.  A home check and adoption application are required.

The adoption fee for Zelda is $200.00.
